Avoid Filing GST Returns on the Due Date: GSTN

The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) is the IT backbone of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system in India. The GSTN has advised taxpayers to avoid filing GST returns on the last date, citing the possibility of heavy traffic on the GST portal, which could result in technical glitches and delays.

Filing GST returns on the last date can be risky, as any technical glitches or delays could result in penalties and interest on late filing. Moreover, the deadline for filing GST returns is usually the 20th of every month, which leaves taxpayers with sufficient time to prepare and file their returns.

To avoid last-minute rush and technical glitches, taxpayers are advised to file GST returns in advance. This will not only help them avoid penalties and interest on late filing but also ensure that their returns are filed accurately and without any errors.

In addition to filing GST returns in advance, taxpayers can also take advantage of various tools and services offered by GSTN to simplify the return filing process. These include the GST Offline Tool, which enables taxpayers to prepare and upload their returns offline, and the GST Suvidha Provider (GSP), which provides end-to-end support for GST compliance.

"The Goods and Services Tax Network ("GSTN") issued an Advisory for the Timely Filing of GST Returns dated May 04, 2023."

  • On April 20, 2023, several taxpayers reported having trouble completing GSTR-3Bs for the period ending March 23. After looking into the causes, it was discovered that many taxpayers sought to file GSTR-3B returns on the last day's afternoon (20.05 lakh GSTR-3B forms were submitted on that day). As a result, there was a backlog in the system for filing GST returns, which inconvenienced some taxpayers.

  • On April 20th, 23', almost 45% of the returns submitted were either NIL returns (no tax liability and no ITC availment) or returns in which no tax was paid in cash. These returns might have been submitted earlier with ease. Furthermore, it is advised that taxpayers file NIL returns via the SMS filing option since it is a quicker and more convenient option, and it will also help to decrease line-ups on the GST system. Therefore, to avoid the last-minute rush, taxpayers are advised to file their Form GSTR-3B far in advance.

  • Additionally, it has been noted that some taxpayers upload numerous invoices (up to 27 lakhs) from the previous period into a single GSTR-1 on the GST filing due date. To prevent negatively affecting the queue (waiting time) on the GST system, taxpayers are encouraged to develop a monthly return filing discipline for all B2B bills for the month. They should also refrain from reporting invoices from the previous period all at once.

The difficulties encountered by taxpayers owing to a last-minute rush may thus be avoided with better planning for filing GST returns, which will also be beneficial to other taxpayers. Additionally, it should be noted that GSTN's infrastructure has recently undergone a significant upgrade.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has advised taxpayers to avoid the GST Return filing due date, as heavy traffic on the GST portal can result in technical glitches and delays, leading to penalties and interest on late filing. Taxpayers are urged to file their returns in advance to avoid the last-minute rush and to ensure that their returns are filed accurately and without errors. Ultimately, being proactive and staying ahead of the deadline is always advisable to avoid any unnecessary stress or penalties.
